La Jornada – ZZ Top returns to the Mexican stage after more than two decades of absence

Texas rock band ZZ Top will return to Mexico this year after more than two decades of absence, with performances scheduled in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey in November.

The group founded in 1969, made up of Billy Gibbons (guitar and vocals), Frank Beard (drums) and Elwood Francis (bass and vocals), resumed activities in 2021 after the death of musician Dusty Hill. Before dying, the original bassist asked that Francis, then the band’s technician, take his place.

Although there was speculation about the end of the group, Gibbons ruled out that possibility and confirmed its continuity within the framework of its anniversary. The 2026 tour began on March 21 at the Outlaws & Legends Music Festival in Abilene, Texas, and includes dates in the United States, Europe and Latin America.

In Europe, thirteen countries have been confirmed, starting on June 22 in Estonia. They will then travel to Latin America, where Mexico will be the first stop, followed by Brazil, Chile and, so far, Argentina, on November 24.

Under the name The Big One, the tour covers different stages of his career, from the blues and southern rock sound of the seventies, with songs such as La Grange and tushuntil the eighties period marked by synthesizers, with hits like Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man and Legsincluded in the album Eliminator.

The group has been awarded on multiple occasions, the most notable awards being being recognized by the Texas State House of Representatives as “Official Heroes of the State of Texas” and having their “ZZ Top Day” on May 4.

Winners of the MTV Music Video Awards (VMA) in 1984 for their video Legsmultiple nominations for his videos, Sharp Dressed Man (1984), Rough Boy (1986), and Doubleback (1990), included in Hollywood’s RockWalk (1994), have six number one singles on Chart Performance, have RIAA certifications for four gold records, three platinum records, two multi-platinum records and one diamond record.

Without underestimating their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2004), they were included for their impact on rock music, as mentioned on the official site of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and for having received their commemorative rings from the VH1 Rock Honors (2007).

ZZ Top will perform on November 11 in Mexico City at the National Auditorium, a place where great artists have performed, being the first rock band to give a concert at this venue and which will now be immortalized in the history of the National Auditorium.
