The director of the video “Un Vals” by Christian Nodal has responded to the controversy unleashed on social networks due to what many have pointed out as a great resemblance between the main model with both Cazzu and Ángela Aguilar, the singer’s ex-partner and current wife, respectively.
“It was our mistake not to realize that this could happen,” said director Juan Antonio Barbazán on Saturday (April 11) in a virtual press conference from Madrid with select media including Spanish Billboard.
“JG Music approved the video, not Christian Nodal,” he added in reference to the singer’s label.
In the music video released on Thursday (April 9), which features a split-screen format, Nodal appears singing in the frame on the left, while a couple stars in a love story in the frame on the right. Nodal recorded his part in Guadalajara, Mexico. The modeling couple was filmed in Spain.
The model in question, a Mexican content creator based in Madrid named Dagna Mata, has been the target of criticism on social networks for her participation in the clip. On Friday (April 10), on his Instagram account, he published a video expressing that “I hope this focuses on what it is, a job, because I wouldn’t like to affect anyone.”
“It hurts me to see that an artist is involved who doesn’t deserve any of this and who doesn’t deserve to be compared to anyone else either,” Mata said. “I had to emigrate from a country to achieve my dream, which is to model and grow in the fashion industry.”
Also on Friday, given the controversy generated by the music video, Nodal published a message on his Instagram stories that attracted attention: “I do not own my name, nor my image, nor my music, and what has happened with the video is proof of that… But my voice, which is the only thing I have left, will always be yours.”
A representative for Nodal and JG Music — owned by the singer’s father, Jaime González — told Spanish Billboard that neither of them would make statements.
Below, everything the director of the video for “Un Vals” by Christian Nodal had to say.
Are Christian Nodal’s videos your responsibility?
In this project that encompasses Christian’s entire album, we made two complex videos: one is for “Incompatibles” that came out a month ago, another that has not yet been released, and the rest are five simpler ones in which we decided to make the screen split in half as is the case of “Un Vals”, in which he appears on the left margin singing and the rest with figurative artists.
Who is in charge of casting?
The casting was done by us, the production house. We were looking for Mexican actresses in Spain, something that was not easy to find, and they gave us Dagna’s profile. We liked it and that’s why we chose it.
Did Christian approve the girl for the video?
No, we always choose the acting actors, Christian didn’t see it. What is being said about the resemblance to Cazzu and Ángela happened to us. At no point was there a strategy or anything like that. We didn’t think it was relevant to show it to Christian. At the end of the day, other people come out. It is a very big process and not everything is consulted with the artist. It was our decision.
Was all this planned as a strategy?
This hurts us as a producer, thinking that it was a planned marketing campaign. It affects our work because it was never the intention. The production people didn’t know who Cazzu was, the truth is we didn’t notice that detail.
Who decides on Christian’s videos? It seems that there is no communication between the singer and his father, owner of JG Music.
In this case the client is JG Music. We give them the videos and assume they were approved if they don’t tell us anything. I have no idea of the communication between them or the relationship they may have. What I know is that Christian is a person with many commitments and that the videos are a small part of his project and he is not in charge of that.
Are there any requests from Christian regarding the topics of his videos?
Since we started working with him, he made it very clear to us that he doesn’t want his personal life to have anything to do with the videos. These have to be artistic, simply related to the theme of the song.
Was there any comment from Christian towards you after the controversy?
He did send me a message that said something like: “You seem to hate me, you’ve gotten me into a big mess.” That’s when we started to find out what was on the networks.
Are you aware of what caused the video?
Totally and I accept my responsibility, but I think that in the end we all end up hurt: us as a production house, the model, and of course Nodal.
