Volkswagen incorporates an innovative system in two of its models to improve efficiency and performance. In which ones? Will you add it to the rest of the range?

This is the new hybrid system that does not need a plug

Volkswagen developed a new full hybrid propulsion system that combines temporary electric driving with high efficiency and long range. This innovative system will be available from October 2026 on the Golf, the midsize hatch, and the T-Roc, the compact SUV that is between the T-Cross and Taos, respectively.

Unlike other electrified solutions, these new models will not depend on cables or charging infrastructure and the energy for the electrical phases will be recovered through regeneration and thanks to the use of a turbo gasoline engine combined with a generator.

This full hybrid system It will be offered in two power levels and promises lower consumption compared to traditional mild hybrids. All details will be presented in Vienna during the International Vienna Motor Symposium 2026, which will be held from April 22 to 24.

Greater efficiency and no need for a plug

The new system of Volkswagen offers multiple advantages. Compared to a mild hybrid, it allows greater use of electric mode, which translates into lower emissions, less consumption and reduced fuel costs. Compared to a plug-in hybrid, it has a lower acquisition cost and eliminates the need for charging infrastructure.

In the case of Golfthis technology will be identified simply as Hybrid, positioning itself between the eTSI (mild hybrid) versions and the eHybrid or GTE (plug-in hybrid) models. This way, Volkswagen expands its range of electrified engines, adding to its 100% electric ID range.

T Roc SUV and midsize Golf hatch

This innovative mechanic that will debut in the T-Roc and in the Golf It drives the front axle and is made up of a hybrid module, a turbo gasoline engine (TSI) and a lithium-ion battery. Two electric motors (one as an impeller and the other as a generator), power electronics, a differential, a single-speed transmission and an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch are integrated within the hybrid module.

It also incorporates elements such as an electric air conditioning compressor and an electric brake booster. Likewise, the high-voltage battery, with NMC cells and a capacity of 1.6 kWh (gross), is located on the rear floor of both models of the German firm.

Three intelligent operating modes

The system combines the motor 1.5 TSI evo2the two electric ones and the battery to achieve a balance between efficiency, performance and comfort. Depending on the situation, the vehicle can operate in three modes:

  • Electric: The car moves only with the electric drive at low speeds, ideal for the city, with the thermal off.
  • Series: The electric motor drives the vehicle while the gasoline produces energy through a generator, optimizing consumption.
  • Parallel: From approximately 60 km/h onwards, the thermal engine functions as the main source of impulse, with electrical support during acceleration.

Volkswagen T Roc

Thanks to this, both the Volkswagen Golf Hybrid like him T-Roc Hybrid They can run in fully electric mode in many urban situations, which means quieter and more efficient driving, among other benefits.

Three driving profiles

The new models will also have three driving modes:

  • Echo: Limit power to 70% and disable boost to maximize efficiency.
  • Comfort: Allows full use of power and electrical support.
  • Sport: prioritizes performance, activating series mode first to have full power quickly.

With this development, Volkswagen takes another step in its electrification strategy, offering an efficient, accessible and practical alternative for those looking for hybrid technology without depending on plugs.

It should be remembered that both Golf (in this variant, of course) like the T-Roc They are sold only in Europe, the most advanced region in terms of hybrid and electric mechanics. The German company has not yet revealed whether or not they will incorporate this system in other vehicles.
