Mexico. More than a third of Mexicans have vitamin D deficiency, which increases the risk of bone fractures and deaths from this cause, specialists warned. They pointed out that most people are unaware of their health condition, although during the Covid-19 pandemic the importance of this nutrient in strengthening the body’s defense system became evident.
It also helps keep the mind balanced, explained Isis Bonequi, marketing director of the Medix laboratory.
serious problem
Vitamin D deficiency was identified just over 15 years ago and is considered a serious problem that should be the focus of health programs.
Although it is recommended that the general population undergo a clinical study to measure vitamin levels, it is a priority for individuals who live with musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoporosis, who have broken a bone or who have frequent falls. Also people with diabetes, obesity and thyroid diseases.
Bonequi highlighted that vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, strengthens muscles, supports memory and concentration and influences mood. It also strengthens the immune system and helps prevent respiratory infections.
He referred to scientific information according to which, administered to women during breastfeeding, it helps transmit to babies the appropriate amount of vitamin for healthy bone development and better protection against diseases.
In adulthood it contributes to maintaining strength and energy, and in old age it acts as a shield against the loss of bone and muscle mass, reducing the risk of falls and fractures.
In addition to pharmaceutical formulations, vitamin D can be obtained from foods such as fatty fish, eggs, and fortified dairy products. Likewise, natural synthesis in the body is favored with physical exercise, particularly strength and weight training, as well as moderate exposure to the sun, the executive indicated.
