La Jornada – Alistan Mega Vaccination Center against covid and influenza in CU

Mexico City. Nearly one hundred thousand doses of vaccines against influenza, covid-19, pneumococcus and measles will be administered at the Mega Vaccination Center that will open tomorrow at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in parking lot three of the University Olympic Stadium, and will remain open until November 14.

Gustavo Adolfo Olaiz Fernández, head of the General Directorate of Health Care (DGAS) of this university, emphasized that vaccination is for the entire society. The service will be provided from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and they must show identification with a photo or vaccination card; This last document will be necessary for girls and boys.

After clarifying that those with a respiratory infection or fever should abstain, the Public Health teacher recalled that in the cold season -especially January and February-, temperature changes favor the development of respiratory infections and vaccines protect more severe symptoms of the disease, avoiding serious consequences.

The surgeon highlighted that last September there was a first vaccination center where 15 thousand doses were administered in response to the measles outbreak, which, although currently less risky, is still valid.

Now, with the support of Miguel Ángel Lezama, head of the Occupational and Preventive Health Coordination of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases “Ismael Cosío Villegas”, of the Ministry of Health, the Mega Vaccination Center operates in Ciudad Universitaria, a sign that the nation’s University works for its community and for the population in general, he said.

Olaiz Fernández highlighted that the measles vaccination was a successful exercise and the one that begins this Monday would be the second one that is even bigger.

“We hope to administer nearly 100,000 vaccines for four types of seasonal diseases for the next winter season and we will continue with the measles season, because there are still groups of people uncovered,” he explained.

In the specific case of covid, he added, it became endemic, which has caused outbreaks to return periodically when the cold weather arrives, which is why it is necessary to provide the vaccine seasonally as happened with influenza.

More than 300 specialized nurses from the Mexican Social Security Institute, Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers and Mexican Petroleum will apply the biologicals; DGAS interns will channel people to the corresponding vaccine.

Optionally, glucose tests and blood pressure measurements will be performed.

“The University is dedicated to its community and this is Mexico. It is good that we can carry out this type of exercises and, above all, have the support of the university system and various institutions in the health sector,” he highlighted.

The DGAS also has vaccination modules planned on the campuses of the National Preparatory School and the National College of Sciences and Humanities; as well as in UNAM faculties and schools, because the objective is for the university community to receive health care.
