He has sold us the same pick-up with three names and a significant price difference

Mexico is a market where medium-sized pick-ups work very well, in fact, for some brands such as Toyota or Mitsubishi, their best-selling model is a truck of this type. And although the segment’s references are products from Japanese and American brands, China has also had a notable weightto the point that they have sold the same pick-up under three different names and with different price ranges.

The first time it appeared in our Mexican market was almost six years ago and it is currently sold under two brands that are not even part of the same group. If you still can’t guess which model we are talking about, it is the Changan Hunter.

This model was developed under the name Kaicene F70 and was the work of Changan and PSA Group (now part of Stellantis). This alliance was precisely used to create a more global and interesting product, embodied in what we knew as Peugeot Landtrek.

In fact, this was the French firm’s first pick-up and thus it arrived in Mexico for the first time in November 2020. Although the ambitions with this product were very great, the reality is that it was a high-priced truck with an unsuccessful approach, because Peugeot is not perceived as a brand with work pick-ups.

At the time, Landtrek was offered with a 2.4L turbo gasoline engine that delivered 210 hp and 236 lb-ft, associated with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Although there were work versions, the top of the range was a product with more equipment and a touch of refinement, but with a price that reached $634,900 pesos (from six years ago).

Furthermore, the pandemic and the emergence of Stellantis did not help the good reception of this product in Latin America, but this gave way to new models being created from the “original” model.

In this way, the RAM 1200which is practically the same vehicle, but with a face adapted to the truck company, which also helped change customer perception, because it can now be seen as a more successful product.

To date it remains on sale, with a portfolio of six versions, including a single cab and chassis variant, as well as a single cab with punt and several double cab versions. The price ranges from $393,900 pesos to $689,900 pesos, all with a 2.0L turbo gasoline engine with 217 hp and 288 lb-ft.

His third appearance is under the original signature, that is, as Changan Hunter. In this case the range is reduced to four versions, only with a single cab and chassis or double cab. It also uses the 2.0L turbo gasoline engine, but the power increases to 222 hp and the torque remains at 287 lb-ft (the numbers are very similar to those of the RAM 1200).

The prices are different, because the access version starts at $433,900 pesos (it has a very similar configuration to RAM 1200), but the top of the range goes up to $583,000 pesos, which is more than 100 thousand less than its sister and it also has all-wheel drive, automatic transmission, aluminum wheels, LED lights, climate control, 360 camera, electronic handbrake, etc.

On the other hand, this product is even more diverse, because in other countries it is sold as FIAT Titano, RAM Dakota or under the Deepal seal (with an electrified engine), which is another Changan brand.
