Google prepares changes to Antigravity to compete with Claude Code and Codex

Claude Code and Codex They are not the only AI programming tools currently available, but they are the most famous. Anthropic and OpenAI platforms compete for the interest and attention of most software engineers, and Google He has grown tired of not being considered by professionals. That is why it is preparing a crucial change to position itself as a real option for programmers, and Antigravity would play a transcendental role.

As reported BloombergGoogle is working on an initiative to unify several of its AI programming tools under one brand. The company’s intention would be to bring together a good part of these efforts under the wing of Antigravity, the agentic programming platform that debuted at the end of last year along with Gemini 3.

That Google is lagging behind its rivals in AI programming is causing concern in Mountain View. Although the company has tools for this task, they are not part of the same product, but rather they are scattered under different names. Unifying them within Antigravity would help them have a more robust product to offer to the developer community. But also to those who are trying their luck with the creation of apps via vibe coding.

There are still not too many details regarding when the new version of Antigravity would be released with the new AI programming features. However, the report mentions that the deployment would be launched in the next weeks. Which makes sense if what Google intends is to reduce the gap with Claude Code and Codex immediately.

Google launched Antigravity alongside Gemini 3, and while it generated some noise with its introduction, it didn’t wow programmers too much. The platform is an integrated development environment (IDE) whose main virtue is having an agentic mode that is responsible for automating various tasks at the time of write and test code. To do this, you can control the editor itself, as well as the terminal and the computer browser.

An interesting point about Antigravity is that Google did not present it from the first moment as a rival to Claude Code or Codex. In fact, the Californians created the platform so that it not only works with Gemini, but is also compatible with models such as Claude Sonnet and GPT-OSS.

The report of Bloomberg indicates that the dispersion of Google’s AI programming tools is seen internally as a lack of focus. In many cases, the company’s own engineers would depend on Claude Code as an assistant for software development. A situation that persists despite the fact that the firm’s guidelines prohibit its use (as well as that of other rival utilities) by employees, unless they can demonstrate that they have a business case in hand.

It will be interesting to see if the push for AI programming solutions brought together in Antigravity gives Google the desired result. Days ago, in fact, the company introduced the first Gemini app for Mac and the Sundar PichaiCEO of the firm, acknowledged that it had been prototyped in a few days using Antigravity. Will the effort be enough to win over programmers?
