With the arrival of the rains, the buzzing of mosquitoes becomes a constant nuisance both when sleeping and when being outdoors, such as in the garden.

Although some types of mosquitoes prefer to bite during the day, others choose dawn or dusk, the truth is that if we do not take action, they will harass us, especially in gardens.

First, let’s understand that completely eradicating them is almost impossible; These insects have survived and been on the planet before us and they fulfill a function within the aquatic ecosystem as food for fish and frogs. However, they are also transmitters of diseases to humans, which is why they are called vectors, a kind of Trojan horses.

There are mosquitoes that can transmit up to five diseases, such as Aedes aegypti, which can carry the dengue virus, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever and valley fever. Although it does not transmit all of them at the same time, it can carry any of them.

And since the mosquito is at home, I now detail some recommendations to avoid having these uncomfortable tenants at home. The first thing is to eliminate the breeding sites: Clean stagnant water is the main breeding ground for Aedes aegipty and dirty water is the main breeding ground for other types of flies that, in addition to being annoying, can also make us sick.

Measures to combat mosquitoes

These insects fly little and usually reproduce very close to where they bite. For example, the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), very common in residential areasoperates at a distance of just 200 or 300 meters from its hatchery.

Pet and bird waterers should be cleaned and refilled daily, and backyard pools should be covered.

Unlike running water from streams or swimming pools, mosquitoes are fascinated by still water that contains organic debris such as leaves, especially if it has been accumulated for more than a week. Another very common place is the pools where they lay their eggs.

Forgotten risk areas: As in areas where old tires, buckets, toys and tarps are thrown away, experts warn to keep an eye on the saucers under the pots, which should be emptied after watering.

Pet and bird waterers should be cleaned and refilled every day, as well as drums or rainwater containers should be tightly covered to prevent flies from laying their eggs.

Bacteria to combat mosquitoes

There are some specialists who recommend placing anti-mosquito pills or granules in Mexico. They are known as “molotitos” to put in pools that cannot be covered. and they have to accumulate water. These “molotitos or costalitos” contain the natural bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bti) that prevents the evolution of the eggs.

This bacteria releases a toxin that exclusively destroys the larvae of mosquitoes and black flies. when ingested, making it completely safe for people, pets, bees and butterflies.

On the other hand, since adult mosquitoes seek out dense vegetation for protection from the daytime heat, keeping grass short and bushes trimmed near resting areas will dramatically reduce their hiding places.

It is also important to use clothing that covers the arms and legs and is light in color. It is recommended that you cover your extremities, especially when you are outdoors. and if you can’t wear those clothes, mosquito repellent is the best option to really avoid them.

There are some plants that help scare away these annoying insects and they are citronella, lavender, lemongrass, among others.

If you are going to be in the garden at a meeting and the presence of mosquitoes is high, it is also recommended to place fans at maximum power on the terrace, this drives them away immediately, since they cannot fly against strong wind currents.

Some of the plants that help scare away these annoying insects are citronella, lavender, lemongrass and having them on the terrace will be a good strategy. Its essential oils emit powerful aromas that mask human body odor (such as carbon dioxide) and disorient insects.

Other plants are basil that releases volatile compounds that confuse mosquitoes, ideal to have near windows. They don’t like the smell of rosemary either, it is resistant and aromatic, especially useful if you form a small fence or green barrier.
