The definition of the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with the Spanish National Team becoming champions after beating Argentina 1-0 at the New York / New Jersey Stadium, but the Spanish team could not celebrate immediately, at least not all of them.
The match, played in a high-intensity atmosphere and with the Albiceleste playing with one man less due to the expulsion of Enzo Fernández, ended up being decided in extra time by a score by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute.
However, the Iberian celebration had a tense close on the pitch once the 120 regulation minutes had concluded. At the moment when the Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić declared the end of the match, the Spanish footballers who were on the bench jumped onto the field to celebrate the title with their teammates.
But, at that moment a fight broke out between members of both teams, where the frustration of the Argentines over the result generated direct friction before the formal ceremony could take place.
How did it all start?
The main incident began when Leandro Paredes confronted and pushed defender Eric García, who fell to the grass while other Argentine players joined in the complaints.
Before the action, midfielder Gavi came to support his teammate; but he was grabbed and knocked down by Lisandro Martínez, which caused the pushing and pulling to spread, with several footballers milling around in the area.
The confrontation did not escalate due to the timely intervention of the technical bodies. Members of the staff and collaborators of the Argentine delegation entered the field to contain their players, including Paredes, and gradually accompany them to the locker room area.
With the ground clear, the Spanish team was able to gather in opposite sectors of the field to continue the celebrations of their second World Cup.
