La Jornada – Skating accident shakes Milan-Cortina 2026; Polish Kamila Sellier injured in the eye

Milan. Poland’s Kamila Sellier had to be immobilized and carried away on a wheeled stretcher from the Milan Ice Skating Arena on Friday after a rival’s skate blade caused a wound just above her left eye.

The accident occurred during the 1,500-meter test of short track speed skating at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games. Misfortune prevented Selier from advancing from the quarterfinal round.

Sellier fell along with the Italian Ariana Fontana, winner of 15 Olympic medals, and the American Kristen Santos-Griswold, who was sanctioned for an illegal lane overtaking that influenced the accident.

The race was stopped while Sellier received treatment. A large white sheet covered her to prevent the public that filled the arena from seeing her, on the last night of short track speed skating. Finally, the Pole gave a thumbs up to the crowd as she was led away, leaving a trail of blood on the final bend of the track, which workers had to clean up during the break.

Polish officials said Sellier’s eye was fine. Stitches were applied to the sand before she was taken to hospital for further tests.
