La Jornada – Italian justice acquits two athletes accused of sexually assaulting a Mexican fencer

The Italian justice system acquitted two Italian athletes accused of sexually assaulting the Mexican fencer Fernanda Herrera during a concentration in Chianciano Terme (north) in August 2023.

The Court of Siena issued the acquittal of Emanuele Nardella and Jacopo Pucci, because “the facts were not proven.”

The decision generated annoyance in the defense of the complainant, who warned that she would appeal the resolution.

According to the Italian newspaper The RepublicHerrera (who competes under the flag of Uzbekistan), was present at the hearing and burst into tears after hearing the verdict.

“I will continue forward with my head held high because I am not just a victim but a warrior,” said the fencer.

The events date back to the early morning of August 4 to 5, 2023. Herrera attended a rally when he visited a bar with the Italians. They convinced her to drink alcohol and then took her to a hotel room, where the assault allegedly occurred.

The next day Herrera filed the complaint.

“I never wanted to show my face all this time, but I’m tired. I want them to see me because I’m proud of myself,” she added.
The prosecution requested five years and four months in prison for Nardella and Pucci but Judge Andrea Grandinetti did not consider it accredited.

Herrera took advantage of her public appearance to send a message to other women. “I can’t believe what has happened. This can’t continue happening. It’s not just me; there are so many cases in sport and in the world where they try to silence women,” she told the media.
