New York. General Motors has begun laying off about 1,700 workers at manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio as the auto giant adjusts to declining demand for electric vehicles.

He Detroit News On Wednesday, the company reported the cuts, which cover about 1,200 jobs at an all-electric vehicle plant in the Detroit area and 550 workers at the Ultium Cells battery cell plant in Ohio, with hundreds of temporary layoffs scheduled. “In response to slower adoption of electric vehicles in the near term and an evolving regulatory environment, General Motors is realigning its electric vehicle production capacity,” the company said in a statement about the cuts to its all-electric vehicle plant: while maintaining that it “remains committed to our manufacturing presence in the United States.”

According to The Detroit News850 workers at the Ohio plant are scheduled to be “temporarily laid off,” along with another 700 employees in Tennessee.

GM says affected employees “may be eligible to continue receiving a significant portion of their regular wages or salaries, in addition to benefits.” The company said it will use the pause to make improvements at both facilities and plans to resume operations in the middle of next year.

Agribusiness company Cargill will permanently lay off 80 employees in Minnesota and an undisclosed number worldwide, in the latest wave of job cuts among agricultural companies hit by a broader sector downturn.

The layoffs, part of a plan announced last December to reduce its workforce by 5 percent, are intended to “reduce redundancy in certain professional areas,” Cargill said in an emailed statement.
