Given the state of the outbreak of measles in the countrys, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) issued a series of recommendations and thus reinforce prevention actions within the university community.
“In recent weeks, greater circulation of the virus has been observed in different entities of the country, with an increase in cases and some deaths.”he highlighted this Friday in a publication in his gazette.
In addition to mentioning vaccination for oneself and family members, the institution also considered the use of face masks, among other tips.
What are the UNAM recommendations against measles?
First of all, review your own vaccination record and that of your daughters and sons, verifying that the information is updated according to age.
On the other hand, verify that girls, boys and adolescents have schemes appropriate for their age:
- Two doses of measles vaccine (one at 12 and one at 18 months of age)
- In the current context, an additional dose is recommended between 6 and 11 months of age
- A booster dose in adolescence (usually from age 11)
Adolescents and adults up to 49 years of age who are not sure if they have been vaccinated with the complete schedule You can receive a dose of measles vaccine if:
- They did not receive two doses in childhood
- They do not have reinforcement in adolescence or in the last six years.
- They do not know their vaccination history
Likewise, that pregnant women should not be vaccinated against measles and that all health personnel should have a booster dose of measles vaccine if they have not received one in the last 10 years.
On the other hand, UNAM recommended seeking guidance on vaccination sites by calling 079.
“It is important to consider that if fever, general malaise or strong respiratory symptoms occur, you should stay at home and avoid self-medication.”, highlighted the Maximum House of Studies.
Use of face masks and other actions
The National Autonomous University of Mexico explained that, in addition to specific actions on vaccination and symptom monitoring, It is advisable to maintain the following suggestions in the face of the circulation of measles and other respiratory infections of the winter season:
- Use face masks in closed, crowded or spaces with limited ventilation (such as public transportation, auditoriums or classrooms) when the individual or collective risk warrants it.
- Facilitate natural or mechanical ventilation in classrooms, offices and common areas
- Maintain frequent hand hygiene and regular cleaning of surfaces, furniture and facilities
- If one or more cases occur in the same academic group or administrative area, activities should not be automatically suspended; Instead, intensify preventive measures and maintain communication with local authorities to make the corresponding report.
“These actions, sustained consistently, allow risks to be reduced without unnecessarily interrupting academic and work activities.”, emphasized UNAM.
