Mexico and England played one of the most exciting matches not only of the 2026 World Cup, but of the entire history of the CDMX Headquarters Stadium. Dozens of English fans have praised our country’s hospitality and Henry Winter, one of the most important sports journalists in the United Kingdom, called for Mexico and England to play again.

The English press has praised the match against as one of the most exciting in the history of the Three Lions.
-
“Mexico has been a wonderful host,” wrote Henry Winter on his X account.
They ask that Mexico and England have a friendly match
One of the best strategies to magnify one’s victory is to praise the recently defeated enemy. In the famous epic poem La Araucana, Alonso de Ercilla did not hesitate to praise the Mapuche people, whom he called Araucanians, after the Spanish troops defeated them in what is now Chile: “these Araucanian people, who with such a display of their courage and spirit offer their throats to the knife for their country.”
We have seen this same kind of praise from the English towards the Mexicans. Both the media and fans have pointed out that the match against The Tri It was a historic event for their team and the Mexican fans did not forget to be hospitable and friendly even in defeat.

Some of the most positive comments have come from Henry Winter, a legendary sports journalist who has worked in media such as The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Through his X account, the journalist launched a significant petition to the English Football Association (FA).
The Englishman asked that England play again against Mexico. Furthermore, he suggested that the friendly match should be at the legendary Wembley stadium:
“Dear FA, can we invite Mexico for a friendly at Wembley please? Outside the Azteca, English fans exchanging shirts with Mexicans, English and Mexican fans drinking and singing together. Mexico has been a wonderful host. It would be great to see them and their fans at Wembley. It hasn’t happened since 2010.”
Hours later, before leaving Mexico City, Henry Winter published another message accompanied by a photo taken from the Second Floor of the Periférico, near San Jerónimo:
“Thank you for being such brilliant hosts at the Azteca and throughout your vibrant city. Thank you for being so sporting in defeat and for welcoming England fans with warmth and drinks. You lost a football match but you gained many, many friends.”
From hobby to hobby, thank you
The recognition did not come only from the press. Free Lions, an association that brings together English fans, published a heartfelt thank you to Mexico, for the quality of its fans and for the hospitality of the Chilangos:
“To everyone in Mexico City who made the English fans feel so welcome over the last few days, thank you. What an incredible city you have, and even better people.”
The association did not hesitate to describe the visit to Mexico as one of the best trips they have made as a visiting fan:
“For those who traveled from England, this will be remembered as a favorite visitor’s trip. Thank you to everyone who organized, hosted and welcomed us with such warmth and respect.”
