The Jalisco Ministry of Health (SSJ) reported that Starting next Monday, March 9, the use of face masks in schools in the state will no longer be mandatory.

The measure comes after one month of its implementation as an additional measure to vaccination to protect the educational community of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (AMG) against measles as a result of the rebound in cases in the entity.

The state agency reported that it only becomes a recommendation for people who have not yet received the vaccine.

Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómezhead of the SSJ, reported that, given the certainty of having high progress in vaccination coverage within the school community, it will be possible to dispense with the mandatory use of face masks.

“As of March 9, 2026, the mandatory use of face masks for basic education communities, a measure that we dictated 30 days ago for the municipalities of San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Guadalajara, Zapopan, El Salto, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga and Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillosis no longer mandatory”.

“However, we consider it convenient to have at this time as a recommendation, no longer mandatory, the use of this input—the face mask—for those people who do not yet have a complete vaccination schedule against this disease,” added the head of the SSJ.

They affirm that the mandatory use of face masks fulfilled its function by providing protection to the students, students, teachers, support and administrative staff of the AMG schools while the vaccination schedule was completed in the different groups.

Population groups that do not have the measles vaccine can still receive it in fixed and mobile modules, from Monday to Sunday, and in macro modules on weekends.

The Benito Juárez Auditorium will host a macro-vaccination module which will be active for two weekends —on March 7, 8, 14 and 15—, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.without the need to make an appointment.

This will allow the vaccine to be brought closer on days when students do not go to school, and the population has more time to take their daughters and sons.

The official urged mothers and fathers or guardians to vaccinate their daughters and sons, if they have not done so, in order to protect them from a disease that can be fatal. The vaccine is the main and definitive tool against this disease.

“There was a very good response from the population, and so in the Jalisco Health system we managed to apply more than one million doses during this month of the biological, which protects against the disease.”

The health authority noted that some groups of the child population have still been identified and schoolchildren who do not have their complete vaccination scheduleso they urge you to come as soon as possible to receive this benefit.

In Jalisco, vaccination has been significantly intensified, since From 2025 to March 5, 2026, two million 630 thousand doses of measles vaccine were administered in the 125 municipalities of the state; of which, just over two million were applied this year.

There is still a small sector of the lagging population that does not have the complete scheme, for whom there are still enough vaccines in the family medicine units of the IMSS and ISSSTE, in hospitals and health centers of the OPD Servicios de Salud Jalisco; as well as in the different traveling modules.

In this regard, he added that epidemiological surveillance and evaluation of the situation continues at all times.
