This year, the opening match which is considered one of the most important events of the moment, will take place next Thursday June 11with the confrontation between Mexico and South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, fueling the enthusiasm of the fans.
The film is based on the book “’86: The year Mexico changed the world”written by the sports writer Francisco Javier González. According to González, Rafael del Castillo’s management laid the foundations that expedited Mexico’s response facing the cancellation of Colombia.
At first, Colombia had been selected as the main venue for the 1986 World Cup, however, a economic crisisthe lack of structure and the high demands of FIFA, led at the time by João Havelange, caused the country to renounce its role as host.
Thus, in November 1982, the president of Colombia, Belisario Betancourt, announced that Colombia was not in condition to receive the World Cup. In this way, Mexico took advantage of the opportunity, offering its facilities and structures installed in the 1970 World Cup.
