La Jornada – Anthony Joshua knocks out Jake Paul in the sixth round

The British Anthony Joshua, former world heavyweight champion, made use of his experience and knocked out the YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul in the sixth round, this Friday in a controversial fight held in Miami, Florida, and broadcast live on Netflix.

This fight, scheduled for eight rounds, pitted two boxers of very unequal levels and complexions for a purse estimated at 184 million dollars.

Although Paul, now a promoter and professional boxer, resisted longer than expected, his strategy of avoiding contact and exchanges of blows exasperated more than one at the Kaseya Center.

The 36-year-old Briton, Olympic champion in 2012, had to work hard to defeat an opponent who tried to provoke him with grimaces, especially sticking out his tongue, until he finally imposed his power in the final stages of the duel.

The first rounds of the fight offered a poor spectacle, between a fleeing Paul with precarious balance, and an expectant Joshua despite a clear superiority.

After falling for the first time in the fifth round, the American ended up receiving heavy punishment in the sixth, where he recovered again after being sent to the canvas again before being knocked out by a straight right hand.

“I got so tired, I couldn’t hold his weight,” Paul said, his mouth bleeding, an injury he attributed to a “broken jaw” caused by Joshua.

“But it’s okay because one of the best in the world broke my jaw,” he said, before saying that he will continue fighting although he will “take a break.”

Paul was initially due to face the American Gervonta Davis, another big name although from a much lower weight class, but changed his plans last month following new accusations of domestic violence brought against the fighter.
