Cody Bellinger is the best hitter available in free agency, and the competition for the former MVP appears to be intensifying.
In an appearance on Foul Territory, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic said he expects Bellinger to make a decision “within a week.” Rosenthal speculated that the Mets and the Blue Jays — two teams that failed to sign Kyle Tucker — are among the main interested parties competing with the Yankees in the race for Bellinger.
MLB Network correspondent Jon Heyman reported that Bellinger is evaluating offers from the Yankees, Mets and two other teams.
Brendan Kuty of The Athletic previously reported (subscription required) that the Yankees have offered Bellinger a five-year contract worth up to $160 million, with two opt-out clauses. Bellinger’s camp has been said to be seeking a seven-year deal, and the length of the contract has become a sticking point in negotiations.
It’s unclear whether the Mets or Blue Jays would be willing to top the Yankees’ reported offer. As Steve Phillips noted on MLB Network’s Hot Stove, the Mets have shown a preference this offseason for short-term contracts, like the three-year pact they agreed to with Bo Bichette. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have been willing to offer longer contracts to free agents: They signed Dylan Cease to a seven-year deal in November and reportedly offered Tucker a 10-year deal.
