After several days of silence, PlayStation had been at the center of a controversy for days over alleged DRM on PS4 and PS5 digital games. Since April 25, modder Lance McDonald documented on social networks that PS4 and PS5 games purchased from the PS Store as of March 2026 they included a 30-day timer to check. Millions of people echoed it and Sony said nothing, until now a spokesperson has made a statement.

Sony’s response to this controversy has finally come through a representative, who has contacted the GameSpot media to confirm the following about DRM. “HE requires a single online check to confirm the game license, after which no further checks will be necessary“. This version partially contradicts rumors that suggested that this DRM required a mandatory monthly verification over the Internet to maintain your digital games.
However, Sony’s statement does not clarify why users were watching active timed on some of their digital games purchased after March 2026. It is also not explained what exactly happens if that initial check is not performed, so the community still has questions about DRM. For its part, PlayStation support had responded to some users with contradictory messages that said the following:

The new PlayStation digital licensing system from March 2026: an online verification converts the initial temporary license into a permanent one, a Sony spokesperson explained to GameSpot.
“If the console does not connect to the Internet within 30 days, the expired license and the game may not start until the connection is reestablished,” PlayStation support even said, among other contradictory responses (don’t take what support says as true). In the end, the DRM is explained in the image you have above, so, during the refund period a is required online verification so that it later becomes a permanent license for the game you just purchased.
